People. Signage. Booths. More people.

That’s what I saw as I walked into the convention hall of an unfamiliar city for my first AAJ convention. The organization was new to me, and my mind raced with questions and self-doubt: Where do I go? How do I make the most of this experience? What’s the best way to network? It was overwhelming, to say the least.

As a young and somewhat shy lawyer, I wasn’t sure where to begin. The thick agenda booklet seemed almost intimidating, offering a wide range of opportunities: CLE sessions, section meetings, litigation groups, networking receptions, and business meetings. I can still hear the sound of the pages flipping as I searched for guidance and direction.

In those early conventions, I often found myself on the sidelines, quietly observing the incredible wealth of knowledge and inspiration around me without really engaging. Eventually, I realized that by taking small but intentional steps—reaching out, asking questions, and connecting with others—I could find my place within this vibrant community. And I did.

Even when I doubted what I could contribute as a young associate with limited resources, the calls to get involved were constant and encouraging. Time and again, I was urged to engage more, take on leadership roles, and make meaningful contributions. I listened, and in doing so, I found the courage to dedicate myself fully to this organization.

Through my growing involvement, I steadily built a strong foundation for understanding AAJ and discovered countless ways to make a positive impact. Along the way, I formed some of the strongest relationships of my life and found what feels like my professional home.

What began as an uncertain first step into an unfamiliar convention hall has grown into a journey of connection, leadership, and purpose. For that, I will always be grateful to AAJ and the community that welcomed me with open arms.
