New Year’s resolutions—how many of you set them? And how many of you struggle to keep them or feel weighed down by them? Resolutions can sometimes feel like pressure instead of motivation. That’s why I’ve embraced a different approach: choosing a Word of the Year.
A single word can serve as a guide through the year ahead. It becomes a touchstone in both good times and challenges, helping you stay grounded and focused. I’ve done this for years, and each time, my chosen word has taken on a deeper significance than I could have ever predicted.
Connection—More Than a Word
In 2020, my word was CONNECTION, and little did I know how much that word would shape my year. As chair of the Women Trial Lawyers Caucus (WTLC), I had to redefine what connection looked like in a world where in-person gatherings disappeared overnight. I wasn’t just someone who connected people—I was the connector.
I found new ways to bring people together, even through a screen. I was told time and time again that I somehow brought energy through Zoom, making virtual events feel just as engaging as in-person ones. My board and I got creative, organizing everything from virtual workouts and baking sessions to sip-and-paint nights, cooking classes, cocktail-making tutorials, and even a virtual silent auction. We didn’t just talk about connection—we made it happen.
This Year, I Am READY
Each new year brings a new focus, and this year, my word is READY.
✅ I am READY to lead.
✅ I am READY for any challenge.
✅ I am READY to listen, to learn, and to grow.
✅ I am READY to embrace opportunities.
✅ I am READY to show up for the people I serve.
I AM READY!
Even though we’re already a few weeks into the year, it’s never too late to set an intention. If you didn’t start the year with a resolution—or if yours has already faded—why not choose a word to focus on instead? What’s one word that will define your focus, your impact, and your growth for the rest of the year?
Let’s make it a great one!
